Fiqh Unraveled

During Ramadan 2015, The Muslimah Network launched an extensive social media campaign – The TMN Ramadan Marathon.

Through daily updates, we posted one dua a day as well as one matter of fiqh related to Ramadan and fasting. Women from across the world responded to our series by asking questions related to the fiqh of fasting and other issues affecting women’s prayers and worship.

Here is a compilation of all the questions received and answered by The Muslimah Network’s Founder, Sister Aysha Abrar.

Please note that the answers are predominantly based on the book Za’ad al Mustaqni, Sharh Al Mumti’ by Sheikh Salih Ibn Uthaymeen. Some matters may have a difference in opinion . This FAQ consists of the safest opinions, one may do their own research and follow with evidence. Links supporting the statements are provided for ease of understanding.

PS: This is a fatwa database. One should assess his/her own situation and then come to a conclusion with a relevant fatwa.

What is the difference between affu' and maghfirah?

Maghfirah: is for Allah to forgive you for the sin but the sin will still be registered on your book of deeds.

Afu: is for Allah to forgive you for the sin and delete it from your book of deeds as if it did not happen.

That is why our beloved Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) advised us to read this dua: اللهم انك عفو تحب العفو فاعفو عني

Taraweeh Go To Top

How is the taraweeh for women praying at home?

Read here to find out how can a woman pray Taraweeh in her house  http://goo.gl/7c1x0b

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said: It is better for her to pray Taraweeh at home, but if praying in the mosque is more motivating for her and helps her to focus better, and if she prays at home she fears that she may neglect her prayer, then in this case the mosque may be better.

Is it ok to read different rak’ah at different times for taraweeh?

Taraweh is sunnah of our prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) so when a sunnah is left we don’t become a sinner but taraweeh is highly recommended sunnah . About praying different amount of rak'ah you can do it as you are capable of since they are nafl salah but if you are praying in congregation it Is better to follow till the imam finishes the prayer.

The point is that the one who prays eleven rak’ahs in the manner narrated from the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is doing well and is following the Sunnah. Whoever makes the recitation shorter and increases the number of rak’ahs is also doing well. A person who does either of these two things is not to be denounced. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said:

If a person prays Taraaweeh according to the madhhabs of Abu Haneefah, al-Shaafa’i and Ahmad, with twenty rak’ahs, or according to the madhhab of Maalik, with thirty-six rak’ahs, or with thirteen or eleven rak’ahs, he has done well, as Imam Ahmad said, because there is nothing to specify the number. So the greater or lesser number of rak’ahs depends on how long or short the qiyaam (standing in the prayer) is.

Al-Ikhtiyaaraat, p. 64  Read more here : http://goo.gl/zprxOM

Is it true that one reads a dua after every 4 rak’ah of taraweeh prayers?

This is baseless . There is not authentic hadith on this issue.

If the imam is praying 20 can a person join the congregation for 8 rakahs and then leave?

It is better for him to stay with the imam until the end of Taraweeh prayer in order to be rewarded

If we reach mosque late for taraweeh we can continue with the imam and should we pray the missed rakat?

No it is not true. Read here:  http://goo.gl/hQhLkB

Is this hadith sahih? Abdullah Ibn Amr Ibn AaSs said that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “Whoever stands up reading 10 ayat, he won’t be written with Allah as the heedless. And whoever stands up and prays with 100 ayat he will be written as those who are qaaniteen (devout- special station with Allah). And whoever reads 1000 ayaat he will be written as one who is piling treasures (qintaar).” Is there any related sahih hadith ?

The wording I found is this : Narrated by ‘Abdallah Ibn ‘Amr Ibn Al-‘Aas RA, in which the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)  said: “Whoever recites ten ayat in qiyam will not be recorded as one of the forgetful. Whoever recites a hundred ayat in qiyam will be recorded as one of the devout [?], and whoever prays a thousand ayat in qiyam will be recorded as one of the muqantareen (those who pile up good deeds).” [Reported by Abu Dawud and Ibn Hibban. It is a hasan report. Sahih Al-Targhib, 635].

Du'a Go To Top

Are we allowed to raise hands in du'a after prayers?

Raising the hands in dua is recommended but there are certain situations where the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was never reported to have done. If done once a while no problem.  It becomes bid’ah if one believes that raising hands after every pray and it becomes a tradition.

What is the ruling of wanting something (like forgiveness or any worldly matter) in sujood? Should we follow the sequence of praying /doing monajaat to our creator? Like at first glorifying our creator, then sending salam upon our prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and other prophets and then to pray for the islami khilafat, then for the guidance of muslim ummah and then we may want things as per our choice. Is it ok as the sequence ?

In the hadeeth of Faddaalah ibn ‘Ubayd: “When any one of you prays, let him start by praising Allaah, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), then let him say du’aa’ however he wishes.” Al-Tirmidhi said: (it is) a saheeh hadeeth. It was also classed as saheeh by al-Haakim, and al-Dhahabi agreed with him. Zaad al-Ma’aad, 1/257, 258.

One of the means of treating them is mentioned in the saheeh hadeeth from Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him): “There is no-one who is afflicted by distress and grief, and says: ‘Allaahumma inni ‘abduka ibn ‘abdika ibn amatika naasyati bi yadika, maada fiyya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiyya qadaa’uka. As’aluka bi kulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka aw anzaltahu fi kitaabika aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqika aw ista’tharta bihi fi ‘ilm il-ghayb ‘indaka an taj’al al-Qur’aana rabee’ qalbi wa noor sadri wa jalaa’ huzni wa dhihaab hammi (O Allaah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your maidservant; my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the Unseen with You, that You make the Qur’aan the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety),’ but Allaah will take away his distress and grief, and replace it with joy.” This is one of the remedies prescribed in sharee’ah.

Can we say "Bismillahir rahmanir rahim" before sana, Tashahud, darud sharif and dua masura in a prayer? Or is it ok if we don't say bismillah before each of them?

We know that Prayers/duas are accepted after fard prayer. But in that link it was mentioned that prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) didn't used to make dua after each fard prayer, does that mean after the fard salat we do the dhikrs and after that can’t we make dua every time?

You can make dua whenever you want but what it means is “raising hands” to make dua after every fard salah is a bid’ah.
